عندما وقعت أحداث 11 سبتمبر 2001، كان واضحاً أن مرحلة جديدة تبدأ في العلاقات بين الولايات المتحدة والعالم العربي والإسلامي، ولم يكن صعباً إدراك أنها ستكون المرحلة الأسوأ في تاريخ هذه العلاقات. ولكن إذا كانت حروب أمريكا بعد أحداث 11 سبتمبر ركزت على أعداء عرب ومسلمين، فلا يعني ذلك بالضرورة أنها لا شغل يشغلها غيرنا. فأهداف حروبها أبعد بكثير منا ومن منطقتنا التي صارت الساحة الرئيسية لهذه الحروب، وإن لم تكن الهدف الوحيد لها. وبالرغم من أن لا بن لادن ولا صدام حسين يعبر عن تيار عريض في العالم العربي والإسلامي، فقد وضع كلاهما أمتنا في أسوأ موقف واجهته في العصر الحديث، خصوصاً وأهمها في أضعف حالة لها نتيجة غياب الحرية وفقر المعرفة، وهما (الحرية والمعرفة) جناحاً التقدم والقوة في عصرنا. ولذلك كان ضرورياً أن نقف أمام حروب أمريكا بعد 11 سبتمبر وقفة تحليلية سعيا إلى فهم منطقها واستشراف آفاق تطورها وبحث موقفنا فيها، وطرح أفكار بشأن كيفية التعامل معها في ضوء الخبرة التاريخية لعلاقاتنا مع القوة التي تقف على رأس النظام العالمي الراهن وتسعى إلى إعادة رسم الخريطة الدولية على نحو يكرس فجوة القوة الواسعة التي تفصل بينها وبين القوى الدولية كلها.
