تعمل "كوري" -وهي شابة في السابعة والعشرين من عمرها أمينة مكتبة البلدية، وتسعى منذ تخرجها إلى الاقتصاد الشديد، حتى تفتح مكتبتها الخاصة، وهي فتاة تميل إلى الاستقلال، خاصة بتعد تجربة حب فاشلة، قررت بعدها ألا تقع في حب رجل آخر تدعوها صديقتها الحميمة إلى حفل تنكري، في محاولتها العاشرة أن تعرفها على رجل يجعلها تتزوج منه، وهي تعتقد أن قطار الزواج سيفوتها، تلتقي كوري في الحفل بشاب رياضي قوي، كان متنكراً في زي القرصان، وكانت تصرفاته تصرفات قراصنة القرن الثامن عشر. ويحاول التقرب منها ولكن تصرفاته تتعارض مع طبيعتها التي تميل إلى الاستقلال تماماً، في حين أن تصرفاته كانت تتصف بالدكتاتورية والتدخل فيما لا يعنيه. يدور صراع رهيب بين الشابة والشاب: كل منهما يحاول أن يفرض إرادته على الآخر.. إلى أين سينتهي هذا الصراع؟ وما هي تبعاته؟ هذا ما ستكشف عنه نهاية أحداث هذه الرواية الرائعة.
