لقد عني كثير من المؤرخين والباحثين والدارسين بالكتابة عن الفرق الإسلامية على اختلاف ميولها، وتباين معتقداتها، ولا سيما فرق الشيعة التي ظفرت بالقسط الأوفر من الدراسات المستفيضة حول نشأتها وأهدافها، ومواطن انتشارها ما خلا فرقة الزيدية التي اقتصر الاهتمام بها عند اتباعها على كتابة سير بعض أئمتها المشهورين، ووصف أحوالهم وما لهم من كرامات فكان أن تصدى المؤلف إسماعيل ابن الأكوع لهذا الموضوع وقدم من خلال هذا الكتاب بحثاً حول الزيدية في محاولة لكشف الالتباس والغموض المحيط بهذا المذهب على أهل وعلى غير أهل وذلك لتوضيح حقيقته، وبيان قول الفصل في أمره.
