بين أنين القرية وأنين الأوطان تدور رحى شعرية صلاح فائق وعيناه شاخصتان صوب "تلك البلاد" حتى بعد الرحيل، وهو أنين لا يعرفه إلا من جريه، أنين متناه في المطلق المكاني والزماني "وحين أعود إلى تلك الأيام / ملبياً نداء الأشجار وأطفال الطرق / متلهفاً رؤية النهر يرتفع / (...) / لا أجد غير مدن تلتهم الأمسيات ..." وبمثل تلك العبارات تتشظى هذه الثيمة بشذراتها النصية والإيقاعية والدلالية عبر النسيج الكلي لقصائد المجموعة، وتظل مسرحاً للتعبير عن وجع العراقي وحنينه وقلقه وإحساسه بما يجري في الوطن وسط هذا الركام من الدمار والموت والظلم. كل تلك المعاني تمتزج عند الشاعر في نسيج إيقاعي شفاف يصدر عن حلم ثخين يمزج بين اللوعة والحسرة والألم، والتوق إلى الكلام والإنعتاق منه إلى الحلم "أترك عملي لأحلم / أيها التمثال المحترق أتجه إليك / هارباً من مشهد امرأة ترمي فراشها من نافذة سجن / قل لي / المنازل البعيدة تذكار القرون / الشلالات بجمع سود / قل لي / البرهان لن يأتي بعد الف عام / أعيش في هدوء / أراقب الآخرين وأستدعي ذكرياتي / أدرك أن المدينة مساحة ومعادن / أما الحدائق فليست غير أوراق / تتلاعب بها أشباح". بهذه الروح يتشكل الخطاب الشعري عند صلاح فائق في فلسفة لغوية لافتة بمركباتها الداخلية والوجدانية فيرسم بذلك قيمتها الحياتية الكلية وأجناسيته الأدبية العالية.
يضم الكتاب قصائد نثرية جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: 1- حريق آخر يليق بمدنية، 2- في مرسم فاتح المدرس، 3- 20 قصيدة، 4- حقول تغمرها المفاتيح، 5- مقاطع ليلية، وأخيراً "تلك البلاد" نص موجه إلى هيفاء خليل.
