المجموعة تقع فى 180 صفحة ويقول عنها الدكتور محمد على سلامة: هذه مجموعة قصصية لأديب متعدد المواهب، يوسف جوهر الذى يعد من جيل الرواد فى فن القصة القصيرة، ذلك الفن الذى حير النقاد والأدباء على السواء ما بين رابط له بفن الرواية والقصة، وما بين مقترب به من الشعرية وهو على أية حال فن بديع إذ يجمع خصائص كثيرة من الأنواع الأدبية، وتضم هذه المجموعة 14 قصة قصيرة لا تتفاوت كثيرا فى حجمها فهى ما بين تسع إلى أربع عشرة صفحة ومعظمها يدور فى نحو اثنتى عشرة صفحة، ومعنى هذا أنها بلغة القصة القصيرة اليوم تعد قصة طويلة نوعا ما، حيث تجنح القصة القصيرة إلى التكثيف فأحيانا تاتى القصة فى صفحة واحدة أو صفحتين أو ثلاث، وأظن أن هذا ما كان طابعا مميزا للقصة القصيرة فى عشر أو خمس عشرة صفحة، وقد ظهر ذلك فى أعمال كل من نجيب محفوظ ويوسف إدريس وإحسان عبد القدوس وغيرهم. المجموعة تحوى 14 قصة وهم "نار ورماد، يوم فى السنة، لست أبا، الورثة على البواب، سارق الحلق، التراب الأحمر، نقطة ضعف، ربنا يفرجها، الحب أقوى من الموت، الساق المقطوعة، المصباح الأعمى، قوام رشيق، هذا أنت وليلة فى أغادير". "يوسف جوهر" أديب مصرى من مواليد محافظة قنا عام 1912، بدأ فى كتابة القصص فى الثلاثينات من القرن الماضى، وكانت أولى قصصه التى نشرت بمجلة رسالة بعنوان "الطامع" ، كما رأس تحرير مجلة الساعة 12 عام 1924، ورأس تحرير مجلة السينما والمسرح وصدر له مجموعات قصصية من بينها "سميرة هانم، الحياة قصص، نار ورماد، أمهات لم يلدن أبدا، دموع فى عيون ضاحكة، خطابات غرامية".
