هذا بحث عرض فيه المؤلف لأديان الجاهلين، قسم مادته إلى خمسة أبواب عالج في الباب الأول موقع بلاد العرب، وما لهذا الموقع من اثر في علاقة عرب ما قبل الإسلام بباقي الشعوب المجاورة من مصريين وبابليين... وفرس وأحباش... ورومان ويونان. كما أوجز تاريخ ممالك العرب ودولهم في الجنوب والشمال وأتى ببعض تراث هذه الدول الديني، كشواهد لتلك العلاقات الإنسانية.
أما الباب الثاني فأفرده لـ "عبدة الله" من الجاهليين وأماكن تواجدهم وطرق عباداتهم وأثرهم في عرب الجاهلية. وتطرق في الباب الثالث إلى الوثنيين فجمع أسماء أصنامهم وأوثانهم وكيفية عبادتها وطرق التقرب إليها. وحط الرحال في الباب الرابع عند عباد النجوم والصائبة. ولم ينس عبادات العرب الأخرى وقد جمع شتاتها من ثنايا كتب الدين والأدب فاستكشف خفايا الأرواح وما تشمله من ملائكة وجن وبين مواطنها وأصنافها من غيلان وسعالي وما اعتقده الجاهليون فيها وافرد لذلك الباب الخامس.
هذا الكتاب محاولة لفهم الواقع الديني الذي كان عليه الإنسان في الجاهلية، ونظرة ذلك الإنسان إلى الكون والحياة. لقد عرف ذلك الإنسان أشكالاً وطرائق متنوعة ومتباينة في عبادته، سواء عبادات الوثنيين وعباد النجوم والصابئة، وهي ألوان من العبادة تفسر علاقة الإنسان الجاهلي بالوجود.
ومؤلف الكتاب، الأب جرجس داود، أقدم على جمع وتنسيق ودراسة تلك العبادات، على نحو تاريخي وموضوعي منتظم في نهج من التأليف العملي المتميز.
وبعد، يكشف هذا الكتاب عن فترة تاريخية بأسلوب عقلاني هادف إلى كشف المزيد من المعارف وأنماط الحياة والتفكير التي انبثقت منها عبادات الإنسان الجاهلي، وأثر الأديان السماوية المقدسة على تطور الشعوب من العصر الجاهلي لغاية حاضرنا.
