يطرح هذا الكتاب قضايا أدبية وإنسانية ليست جديدة، لكنها تتجدد باستمرار مع تتابع حركة الزمان، فقد يقع شاعر عربى فى إسار تجربة مر بها شاعر آخر سبقه إلى الوجود بسنوات، بل بقرون من الزمان، وهنا يتسرع المراقبون قائلين إن الشاعر اللاحق قد سرق من الشاعر السابق، والحقيقة أن طبيعة حياة الشاعرين هى التى جعلت تجربة الشاعر الثانى تبدو تكراراً لتجربة الأول.
يبدأ الكتاب باعتقال الشرطة للشاعر عمر بن أبى ربيعة ومحاكمته على أساس أنه سرق ما سبق أن قاله امرؤ القيس، وفيما بعد نجد عمر بن أبى ربيعة يتوعد نزار قبانى ويهدده بالسيف الذى أخرجه من غمده، مطالباً إياه بأن يعتذر لله عما ارتكبه، وهو أنه كتب قصائد عديدة تبدو كأنها مسروقة من عمر.
شعراء الحب هم الذين لهم الصدارة فى هذا الكتاب لكنهم ليسوا وحدهم بطبيعة الحال، فهناك شعراء الهجاء الذين أطلقوا صواريخ شتائمهم ضد خصومهم، وهناك شعراء عاشوا البؤس بل تجرعوه، وهناك آخرون تزلزلت القيم والمثل التى كانت راسخة أمامهم فاندفعوا إلى العبث والسخرية مما كان راسخاً.
