الغرض من هذا الكتاب-كما جاء في تصديره-أن يوفر قواعد ومقترحات عملية لكتابة سيناريوهات الأفلام التي يجري عرضها في دور السينما أو في التليفزيون، ويتميز الكتاب-في هذه الناحية-عن كل ما عداه في المكتبة العربية تقريباً، بضخامة كمية القواعد والمقترحات العملية التي يطرحها من خلال ما يربو على ثلاثمائة عنوان فرعي.
ومن هذه العنوانين ما يمثل صياغة مركزة ومباشرة للقاعدة التي يتناولها الكتاب بالتحليل، مثل: كن متنبهاً للأزمات؛ اكتب لا تبرق؛ الحوار يعرقل سير المطاردات؛ التمهيد بعناية، الارتداد يعوق الحركة؛ الحدث قبل الكلام... الخ.
والكتاب لا يكتفي بتحديد القواعد وتحليلها، وإنما يضرب عليها الأمثلة ويقدم التطبيقات العملية. ويحرص-كلما لزم الأمر-على ذكر الاختلافات الدقيقة التي يجب مراعاتها بين ما هو مطلوب للعرض على شاشة السينما وما هو مطلوب للعرض على شاشة التليفزيون.
ويتضمن الكتاب فضلاً عن ذلك من المعلومات السينمائية ما يعين كاتب السيناريو، وإن بدت في غير اختصاصه المباشر، مثل الكلام عن اللقطات وحركة الكاميرا والزوايا والمونتاج وبعض الحيل السينمائية.
هذا وقد توفر على ترجمة الكتاب كاتب السيناريو المرموق مصطفى محرم صاحب مسلسلي التليفزيون الشهيرين: "لن أعيش في جلباب أبي" و"الحاج متولي" فضلاً عن أعمال تلفزيونية أخرى عديدة، وذلك إضافة إلى ما كتبه للسينما، حوالي 120 فيلماً، من أبرزها: ليل وقضبان، أهل القمة، اغتيال مدرسة، الحب فوق هضبة الهرم..
