المقام: لون عراقي من الغناء القديم تصاحبه الآلات الموسيقية، وهوة تراث موسيقي يتسم بصفة أو طبيعة ارتجالية في الغناء والعزف على مختلف السلالم الموسيقية التقليدية بطريقة مضبوطة. هذا من كون المناسبة دنيوية، أما إذا كانت دينية فيقتصر على استخدام الجزء الغنائي، والتخلي عن المصاحبة الآلية كما في المولد والتهاليل والتواشيح والتمجيد. هذا وتتميز المقامات العراقية ما عدا خضوعها للقواعد التي تتحكم بالأجناس الموسيقية وتصويرها، باحترام الخصوصيات التي تفرضها صبغة المقام نفسه على كافة الأصعدة أي في الشكل والنغم وفي بقية العناصر المكونة لخصوصية المقام العراقي، إضافة إلى تمسكه بالميزات الجمالية الخاصة به على صعيد الأداء.
ونظراً لما يتمتع به المقام العراقي من أهمية في التراث الموسيعي ولندرة ما دون في هذا الباب، اعتنى "ماجد شير" بوضع دراسته التي بين أيدينا والتي هي في الأصل محاضرة ألقاها في لندن عام (1991) وتحدث فيها عن كل ما يتعلق بالمقام العراقي بدءاً بمعنى كلمة مقام، فتعريف المقام، فتاريخه، فعلاقته بالنغم، مقوماته، وتركيبته، وعدد المقامات وأنواعها فتصنيف المقامات، فالآلات الموسيقية المستعملة في مصاحبة المقام كالسنطور، والجوزة، وحتى تأتي الدراسة متكاملة ومغطية لجوانب الموضوع كافة.
ألقى المؤلف الضوء على أنواع المقامات مقسماً إياها إلى مقامات بها تحرير وأخرى بدون تحريراً وبدواة، وتحدث عن كل نوع على صدى، وهو في تحليله لكافة جوانب الموضوع ارتكز على مصادراً أساسية لخبراء المقام واستقى معلوماته في كبار الباحثين أمثال "شعوبي إبراهيم" و"هاشم رجب"، و"قوجمان جلال الحنفي" و"شهرزاد قاسم حسن".
إن هذا الكتاب الصغير الحجم الغني بالمضمون ما هو إلا مدخل إلى علم واسع ومتشعب تمتد تشعباته إلى كل مفاصل الحياة، إنه المقام العراقي، ذلك الفن النغمي الزاخر والضارب أطنابه في حياة هذا الشعب.
