إنه كتاب عن يهود من لبنان عاشوا في غالبيتهم في وادي أبو جميل، وسط بيروت، وهو الذي عُرف بوادي اليهود. الشخصيات الواردة فيه وجدت كلها بالفعل، روى روياتها أصدقاؤهم وجيرانهم كما تذكَروها. يستند الكتاب بالتالي إلى وقائع حصلت بالفعل، وصيغت القصص بأسلوب روائي لا يغير في حقيقة أحداثها ووقائعها الرئيسية شيئاً، إلا أن أكثرية الأسماء الواردة استبدلت لحساسية الروايات، وبطلب من الرواة أنفسهم؛ لكنها قصصاً عدة ذكرت فيها الأسماء الحقيقية لأصحابها. هذا الكتاب هو كتاب عن ذاكرة اللبنانيين، عن يهود لبنان وعاداتهم وتقاليدهم، وقد استند إلى عشرات المقابلات مع سكان وادي أبو جميل الذين عاشوا تلك الفترة وعرفوا عن قرب يهودها قبل رحيلهم، وتتوقف القصص عند الرحيل، من دون أن تكمل لتروي ما حل بهؤلاء بعد ذلك. إنه كتاب عن الذاكرة وعن الماضي، وعن طائفة عاشت في لبنان ونسجت فيه رواياتها، وهو كتاب عن حيَ كانت له قصة، وكان فيه سكان عاشوا واندثروا، لكنهم اندثروا بملء إرادتهم ولظروف خارجة عن إرادة الجميع. فاليهود اللبنانيون طائفة أندثرت من لبنان من دون أن يعني ذلك أن يهود لبنان تبرأوا من انتمائهم إلى وطنهم أو الأغلبية منهم على الأقل؛ ومن دون أن يعني ذلك أنهم لم يعودوا طائفة من طوائف لبنان الثماني عشرة، لكنهم بالمعنى الفعلي أصبحوا جزءاً من الماضي وجزءاً من الذاكرة فقط، بعد أن كانوا جزءاً فاعلاً من حياة لبنان وإقتصاده.
