نال شهادتي دكتوراه في القضايا الدولية والعلاقات الدولية من جامعات واشنطن (١٩٧١ و١٩٧٤).
درّس في الجامعات الاميركية (واشنطون وبالتيمور) ثم في الجامعة اللبنانية والجامعة الأميركية في بيروت.
من مؤسسي حركة المحرومين وأول رئيس للمكتب السياسي لحركة أمل (١٩٧٦-١٩٧٩).
عمل رئيسا لمجلس ادارة مجلس الجنوب (١٩٧٩-١٩٨٥) ونائبا اول لحاكم مصرف لبنان المركزي (١٩٨٥-١٩٩٠).
له مؤلفات عدة.

يتحدث كنعان في كتابه عن تكوّن الرؤى السياسية لدى رؤساء اميركا السابقين واللاحقين ، استناداً الى تركيبة النظام الديموقراطي فيها ومسار عمل آلياته، منذ زمن جورج واشنطن وصولاً الى مرحلة رئاسة باراك أوباما. والمسار الديموقراطي تموّهه شوائب تمارسها اجهزة الاستخبارات وتحركها اللوبيات، فيأتي الرئيس "منتوفاً ومهيئاً" بحسب رغبة هذين الطرفين وخلفهما لوبي العائلات الاقتصادية والشركات الكبرى. يلقي كنعان الضوء على تاريخية المشكلات والعقبات التي واجهت أوباما في رئاسته الأولى وستواجهه في رئاسته الثانية، ويرى انها ليست آنية، ولا انوجدت في وجهه، انما هي نتاج حقبات انتجتها السياسة الاميركية باداراتها المتعاقبة، لكن الدستور الاميركي يحفظ وحدة أميركا ومسارها. ويصف الظروف التي أدت الى وضع أوباما على رأس السلطة "في وقت عصيب تغلي فيه عملية عدم الرضا والاكتفاء، خصوصاً من النواحي الاقتصادية المتعثرة التي لم تعرفها الولايات المتحدة منذ انهيار الاقتصاد في الثلاثينيات جراء سياسة الحروب في افغانستان والعراق واستراتيجية التدخل العسكري التي قادها المحافظون الجدد في زمن الرئيس جورج بوش". ويرى المؤلف ان سياسة اوباما لا تركز على الاقتصاد فحسب، بل على لعبة الأمم وادارة الصراع والعمل على القوى الاقليمية وتحقيق الأهداف التي تفيد الجميع في جعل العالم في حال استقرار مستمر وسلام دائم. استطاع باراك اوباما ان يصبح رئيساً بسبب معرفته وفهمه تركيبة النظام الاميركي والقوى الداخلية التي تحركه. وبالمقارنة استطاعت اسرائيل في غياب الدور العربي ان تستفيد من فهمها لتركيبة النظام الاميركي وتأثير القوى الضاغطة عليه في الداخل، والاستفادة منها لمصلحتها وطغيانها.
