في ظل الدولة المملوكية الثانية قامت في مصر حركة علمية زاهرة، ارتقت فيها العلوم والفنون، من خلال العديد من المراكز العلمية التي وجدت فيها-آنذاك-وبفضل عوامل متعددة، وكان لهذه الحركة سماتها المميزة لها. لكن تأخرت طويلا العناية بدراسة هذه الحركة العلمية على أسس منهجية قائمة على النظرة العلمية المتأنية، المقتضبة العمق والتقصي والنقد، نتيجة لخطأ شائع-تردد في كتابات الباحثين، مستشرقين وعرب-مفاده أن نتاج هذه الحقبة ليس سوى كتابات تتمثل في الشروح والعديد من المختصرات، أو الجمع التـأليفي (الموسوعي) الخالي من الابتكار والجدة، سواء في المادة أو في المنهج. ولهذا جاء هذا الكتاب الذي يرد فيه المؤلف على الادعاءات الخاطئة التي أثيرت حول الحركة العلمية التي ظهرت في الحركة المملوكية الثانية مفصحاً عن الأصالة والجدة في هذه الحركة، وذلك عبر تقديمه هذه الدراسة المنهجية المتأنية للتراث الفكري المنتمي إلى هذه الحقبة متمثلاً بالقلقشندي وهدفها إلقاء الضوء على شخصية القلقشندي وعصره ومن ثم الكشف عن منهجه في الكتابة التاريخية من خلال مؤلفيه "صبح الأعشى"ومآثر الأنافة"... وقد اختار المؤلف القلقشندي موضوعاً للدراسة لما كان له في مشاركة في بيئته مشاركة جيدة، مؤثراً فيها ومتأثراً بها، سواء بما كان له من علاقات وصداقات، وما اسند إلية من وظائف ومهام، أو بما ترك من مؤلفات. أظهرته عالما موسوعياً، ذا ميول خلابة نحو الأدب واللغة، والفقه، والحديث، والجغرافيا، والأنساب، والتاريخ.
