يحتوي هذا المؤلف على ثمان وعشرين دراسة مستقلة في ثمانية وعشرين مصدراً تأريخياً تنتمي إلى دولة "المماليك الجراكسة" في مصر، وزعت على عشرة موضوعات هي: فلسفة التأريخ وبيان مناهجه وطرق الكتابة فيه، الحوليات، الموسوعات التاريخية، المعاجم التاريخية، الخطط والرسوم والنظم، الترجمة الذاتية، الترجمات المفردة بالتأليف، السيرة النبوية العطرة، الموضوعات المفردة بالتأليف، التاريخ في الموسوعات الأدبية والعلمية. وقد بُذل فيها قصارى الجهد، سواء بتخير المنهج الهادف إلى دراسة جادة، يُكشف من خلالها عن محتوى هذه المصادر التاريخية وتنظيمها، وتنسيقها: الترتيبي والتعبيري، ومصادرها [تعددها وتنوعها، وطرق النقل عنها، أو الإسناد إليها]، وما تردد من نقد تأريخي فيها، فضلاً عن تقويمها، أو باستخدام العديد من المصادر التي لم يعن الكثيرون بدراستها واستخدامها قبل. كما أمكن من خلال هذه الدراسة تصويب العديد من الأخطاء الواردة في تلك المصادر المتناولة بالدراسة، وكذا التي وقع فيها كثير من الدارسين المحدثين. وهذه الدراسات مع استقلاليتها تبرز أهم سمات المنهج المتبع لدى " مدرسة التأريخ المصري"، آنذاك، سواء بتعدد مناحيها، وتعدد موضوعاتها، أو بانتمائها إلى أبرز مؤرخي هذه المدرسة، وهم على سبيل الحصر لا التعداد: ابن الفرات، ابن دقماق، القلقشندي، الدميري، المقريزي، وابن حجر العسقلاني، خليل بن شاهين، وابن تغري تردى، الكافيجي السخاوي، السيوطي، عبد الباسط الحنفي، ابن الطولوني، وابن إياس.
