المعلم مراد صاحب المقهى, أو الحاج مراد عامر, أو المهندس الكبير (سابقاً), إنسان وجد حلاً للمعضلة الإنسانية الأزلية, حيث نجح في الجمع بين عشقه الشديد للحياة الحرة المتجددة التي تجلب السعادة, وبين الإخلاص في البحث لنفسه عن منزلة عند الإله. هو عدو لدود للثبات والجمود والتحجر, سواء على مستواه كفرد أو على مستوى مجتمعه المنكوب بحكم طاغية مستبد تؤازره مجموعة من الفاسدين. ورغم أنه نجح تماماً في إجراء تغيير انقلابي غير عادي على مستويات حياته الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والعاطفية, مدركاً– بعد نجاحه– أن كل من لديه الإرادة لتغيير واقعه, لابد أن يكون قادراً على تغيير مجتمعه.. إلا أنه يصدم بالعجز والاستسلام واليأس والخنوع من جانب المجتمع أمام طغمة من اللصوص والمنافقين, تراجعوا بقدرات البلاد إلى وراء بعيد, بعد أن نهبوها وأفشلوها عن جدارة.
وبينما يسترجع المعلم مراد مذكراته عن النكسة, والتي كتبها منذ أربعين عاماً, فإنه يكتشف من تتبعه لمظاهر الانهيار المعاصرة, أن البلاد مقدمة على كارثة محققة تهون أمام آثارها المدمرة آثار النكسة القديمة.. ومن هنا فإنه يتخذ اتجاها تحريضياً في دوائر حركته الحياتية بين المقهى– الذي اشتراه بمباركة من زوجته دكتورة الفلسفة– والبار– حيث شلة الأنس القديمة التي لم يفارقها حتى بعد مفارقته الخمر.
