كل صعود يعقبه هبوط أو سقوط بحكم سُنة الحياة وقوانين الطبيعة وتقلب أحوال الدنيا وأحداث الدهر. لكن حلمي يؤمن بأن منحنى صعوده لابد أن يكون خطًا مستقيمًا، لا ينحني ولا يهبط أبدًا، وإنما يتصاعد في استمرار لا ينتهي. لم يعتقد في أن هذا الفكر مناقض لناموس الحياة والكون، فالإنسان يصل إلى ذروة عمره حين تكون قدراته وملكاته في أحسن أحوالها، ثم يبدأ بعد ذلك مرغمًا في النزول باتجاه الشيخوخة حتى يلتقطه الموت، فلا شباب حينئذ ولا شيخوخة ولا شىء غير العدم الذي خلق منه. كذلك الأمر نفسه مع الحضارات الإنسانية المختلفة، ومع أطوار حياة النبات والحيوان.. واقعة مؤلمة شهدها في طفولته حين أهانت السيدة الثرية أباه – سائقها الخاص – كان لها أثر خطير على مسار حياته التى عاشها طولًا وعرضًا، والتي – برغم ثرائها – لم تكن تُمثل أكثر من تراجيديا إنسانية لا مهرب منها.
