"لم يكن النمر معه، ولم يلتقط بشعور حيوان الغابة، ارتجافة القلق، ولم يشعر، على وجه الدقة، باللذة في حركة الأصابع، ولم يتسجب لها، كانت رائحة اليد تحرّك في نفسه عادات يتحسسها مثل أجراس قديمة ترّن في وحدته، يوقد رنينها في وحشته حدة المخلب وقوة الناب.
كان وحيداً لحظة فتح باب السيارة وأنزل ساقه، لينتظر قليلاً، ريثما يُنزل أصابعه بحركة ليّنة على حافة الباب. ذلك ما تؤكده خطواته المتوالية على الرصيف وقد انطبعت على واجهات الزجاج، ومفاصل الألومنيوم، من دون أن يكون ثمة أثر لظلال حيوانية بصحبتها أو على الكرسي وراءها، وقد انطبع هو الآخر، على الواجهات والمفاصل بعد أن ترك الباب، على عادته، مفتوحاً، قبل أن تمتد يد لتردّه بهدوء".
