طرأت تغيرات جوهرية على النظرية الإعلامية ووسائلها في العالم، بسبب ما رافقها من ثورة المعلومات والاتصالات، والآثار الكبيرة التي تركتها هذه الثورة ومازالت على الإعلام وبخاصة الإعلام العربي في المرحلة الحالية. وتحاول هذه الدراسة الاقتراب من القضايا الإشكالية المعاصرة فيما يخص تطور الصحافة والإعلام العربي، وتحديداً في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، وما تضمنه ذلك من سجال وصراع ومواجهة خاصة مع الإعلام الصهيوني وإشكالية التطبيع، ومحاربة القولبة السلبية، وما رافق ذلك من محاولات الحداثة وتطور مسار الإعلام العربي وصولاً إلى شبكة الإنترنت وما رافقها من جدل. لقد تأثرت الصحافة العربية بمؤثرات أخرى أهمها العولمة والقرية العالمية والتدفق الإعلامي غير المتوازن وضخ المعلومات عن طريق شبكة الإنترنت، مما يعني ضرورة وضع استراتيجية لمستقبل الإعلام العربي حتى يؤدي هذا الإعلام دوره بصورة فاعلة وإيجابية، ومن أهم سمات هذه الاستراتيجية تجاوز الأنماط الموروثة، والعمل من خلال استراتيجية إعلامية عربية جديدة، والتكامل الإعلامي العربي، والمشاركة الفعالة في الحوار العالمي للنظام الإعلامي، ومواجهة التحديات والعقبات التي تواجه الإعلام عموماً وحلها وعدم إهمالها وتأمين متطلباتها، والاستقلالية والتعددية الصحفية والإعلامية، وإلغاء الرقابة المسبقة.
