السياحة نشاط تجاري كبير، فقد أصبحت صناعة رئيسية على النطاق العالمي، ومن المنتظر أن تبدي نمواً قوياً متواصلاً، وقد زاد عدد السياح على المستوى الدولي إلى ثلاثة أمثاله خلال العقدين الماضيين وارتفعت حصائل السياحة الدولية من (22) مليار دولار تقريباً في عام (1970) إلى حوالي (300) مليار دولار في عام (1990).
ومع إضافة السياحة والسفر الداخليين ستكون هذه الأرقام أكبر بكثير وفقاً لدراسة أجريت لحساب أمريكان اكسبرس ترافل استأثرت السفر والسياحة بمبيعات بلغت نحو 1916 مليار دولار في عام 1987، مما يجعلها أكبر مهدر للعمالة في العالم، وعلى إمتداد العقيدين الماضيين كان الجانب الأكبر من السياحة يذهب إلى أوروبا الغربية وأمريكا الشمالية وأوروبا الشرقية والإتحاد لجمهورية الإشتراكية السوفياتية وشرق آسيا والمحيط الهادئ، واستأثر إقليم البحر المتوسط بمتوسط مقداره (36%) من حجم السياحة الدولية.
تتباين المساهمة النفقات السياسحة في الناتج المحلي الإجمالي تبايناً واسعاً من بلد إلى آخر حسب حجم الإقتصاد ومستوى الإنفاق، تتراوح حصة السياحة في الناتج المحلي الإجمالي لكثير من دول الكاريبي بين (15% - 30%).
وعلى الرغم من أن السياحة الدولية كانت تعتبر وسيلة للمساهمة في النمو الإقتصادي للبلدان النامية فإن الدراسات التي أجريت في العقدين الماضيين أثبتت أن تكلفة البنية الأساسية الضرورية والإمدادات الضرورية للسياحة الدولية كانت عالية جداً.
