أهمية الكتاب يتناول الكتاب أهمية الدور الذي تؤديه المملكة العربية السعودية تجاه القضايا العربية الرئيسة منذ إنتهاء الحرب الباردة مرورا بمجمل التطورات والاحداث التي شهدتها المنطقة والتي انعكست بمجملها على سياسة المملكة الخارجية فالمتتبع لمسار تطور السياسة السعودية لما بعد الحرب الباردة تجاه المنطقة العربية يجد انها لم تمثل انقطاعا عن المدة التي سبقت انتهاء تلك الحرب وانما امتدادا نوعيا لها الا أن المتغيرات التي طرأت على البيئتين الداخلية والخارجية منها في السنوات الأخيرة من ثمانينات القرن الماضي وبداية عقد التسعين منها حتمت على المملكة العربية السعودية التكيف مع تلك المتغيرات والاستجابة لها غير ان أحداث 11 من ايلول عام 2001 وإتهام المملكة العربية السعودية بالارهاب دفع الأخيرة الى ممارسة دور سياسي أكثر فاعلية حيال قضايا المنطقة العربية فجاءت مبادرة الامير عبدالله بالسلام 2002 ودعودة المملكة لسوريا بالانسحاب من لبنان عام 2005 فضلا عن بروز ايران كمنافس إقليمي ضد سياسة المملكة ليس في منطقة فضلا عن بروز ايران كمنافس إقيليمي ضد سياسة المملكة ليس في منطقة الخليج فحسب وإنما في المنطقة العربية ككل خاصة في أعقاب التغيير السياسي في العراق والتفوق النسبي في القوة الذي امتلكته مقارنة بدول الخليج العربي هذه المتغيرات دفعت بالمملكة نحو التنويع في توجهاتها السياسة الخارجية حيث أدركت المملكة اهمية التغير قي السياسة الخارجية والانغماس اكثر في الشأن العربي وصانع القرار أضحى لا يستطيع أن يتجاوز المتغيرات الدولية والاقليمية في حساب الكلفة التي من الممكن أن تدفعه مقابل أي سلوك إزاء المنطقة وذلك عن طريق التكيف والموازنة سبيلا لتحقيق أفضل النتائج والغايات حيث تبقى السياسة هي فن الممكن
