هناك أوقات في حياة كل كاتب، يهن فيها عزمه، وتبدو له واسطته وهي الكلمات، كأنها صخب عالم من ترب. وعمل الرسامين وصحبتهم خلاص شبه معجز من هذا الشعور "بالإغلاق". فهو بينهم كمسافر في بلد يسر به لثلاثة أسباب: أنه يحبه، وأنه يفهمه بعض الفهم على الأقل، وأنه ليس بلده. ومع أنه قد يغبط ساكنيه فإنه لا يمكنه أن يغار منهم، كما أنهم لا يمكنهم أن يغاروا منه، فسياستهم لا تعنيه. وإذا منوا بثورة فإنه لا يعزل، ومهما يعكف على ملاحظة فردياتهم المختلفة فإنه لا يزال يدرك أن فيهم خلق مهنتهم، كما يمكن أن يقال عن الفرنسيين إن فيهم خلق قوميتهم، وهذا الخلق يختبر خلقه هو ويقويه ويحييه، إن جواهر الناس انعزالية لا اجتماعية، وما يكونه المرء يكونه وحده، وحرية الاتصال والدخول في معامل أناس آخرين تمكنه من أن يقبل بشجاعة وحدانية إنسانية. إنها الحد الفاصل بين انعزال منتج وسجن عقيم.
