تمثل الخريطة بالنسبة للجغرافي-وسيلة بيانية تعرض عليها نتائج الدراسات الميدانية وخلاصة الأبحاث الجغرافية التي تتمثل في شكل توزيعات وعلاقات مكانية، كما يستقي منها الكثير من البيانات الأساسية، أو يضاف إليها إذا كانت مطبوعة أية بيانات حديثة وجديدة. وبعبارة أخرى فإن الخريطة تلعب دوراً مزدوجاً بالنسبة للجغرافي فهي من ناحية تساعده على عرض مادته العلمية وبيان ما انتهى غليه من نتائج إضافية ومعلومات حديثة وقياسات جديدة. ومن الناحية الأخرى تعينه على القيام بدراساته وأبحاثه، إذ تقدم له بيانات ومعلومات جاهزة وصحيحة، كما تقدم الصورة المرئية التي تساعده في تفسير العلاقة المتبادلة بين الإنسان والبيئة. ونظراً لما تمثله الخرائط من أهمية عملية في دراسة التوزيعات البشرية ورسومها البيانية عنى المؤلف "فتحي عبد العزيز أبو راضي" بوضع هذه الدراسة التي تمثل ركيزة يعتمد عليها طلاب الجغرافيا في مرحلتي الليسانس والدراسات العليا، إذ أنها تخدم حاجة ملحة يلمسها الجغرافي في ممارسته الدراسية والبحثية، كما أنها تحاول أن تقدم عرضاً شاملاً لنوع من خرائط التوزيعات الجغرافية وهو خرائط التوزيعات البشرية، وذلك في تبويب جديد، يجمع بين قواعد وأصول الرسم ومشاكل التنفيذ، ويلتزم بالتصنيف الموضوعي إلى جانب التصنيف الفني. وتحتوي الدراسة على ثلاثة أبواب رئيسية تضم تسعة فصول، وتدرس هذه الأبواب خرائط توزيعات السكان وخرائط العمران والخرائط الاقتصادية على الترتيب. هذا وقد عنى المؤلف بتضمين دراسته فصولاً ثابتة يعرض من خلالها طرق وأساليب الرسوم والأشكال البيانية والتوضيحية غير التقليدية لبيانات السكان والعمران والمظاهر الاقتصادية المتنوعة. وقد حاول المؤلف أن يعرض هذه الطرق والأساليب بصورة مبسطة حتى يدرك الطالب الهدف من وراء هذه الرسوم وما تتميز به من خواص معينة قد تفيده عندما يختار منها ما يناسب البيانات الخاصة لديه عن أية ظاهرة جغرافية اجتماعية، سواء كانت خاصة بالسكان أو العمران، أو اقتصادية؛ كما وحرص المؤلف على تزويد الدراسة بنماذج متعددة من الخرائط والصور والرسوم البيانية، وهدفه مساعدة القارئ على تتبع ما يقرأ في متن فصول الكتاب، كما تساعده على فهم قواعد الرسم ومشاكل التنفيذ عند تطبيق الأساليب الكارتوجرافية.
