إن في الحكمة جلاءً لصداء القلوب، وتنبيهاً عن وسن النفوس، وشحذاً لما كلًّ من الأفهام، ولا سيما إذا استمع إليها السامعون بإقبال من القلوب على تفهمها وصدق إرادة لهدايتها، وعزم على الانتفاع بها، وتلق بقبولها والدوام عليها، وإعمال العقل على التفكر بها، فإن الفكر مفتاح كل علم، مستنبط كل علم، وكاشف كل مستور، واقتباس من نور الله، وتزود من كل فائدة، وشحذ للعقول المستبهمة، وتدارك للحظوة، وبحث عن الكنوز المذخورة. وفي هذا الكتاب تتصل حكمة المتقدمين بحكمة المتأخرين، وكلهم برزوا في الحكمة ووصّوا بوصايا فاضلة، يحاول المؤلف استحضارها مستهلاً بقيمة الحكم في المأثور من كلام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ثم حكم الخلفاء الراشدين وحكم العرب وحكم الكتب المنزلة وحكم الشعراء وحكم الفُرْس ولآلئ من حكم الصين والهند واليونان وأتبع ذلك بأقوال حكمية إيطالية وفرنسية وإنكليزية وألمانية وفلندية وروسية ويابانية وتيبتية وبولونية وهولندية والكندية والسويسرية والزوجية والدانمركية. وحكماً متفرقة.
