يمثل هذا الكتاب "زبدة المقال في معجم الرجال" آراء المرجع "السيد أبو القاسم الخوئي"، والتي أوردها في معجم رجاله، المؤلف من ثلاثة وعشرين جزءاً، حيث اعتنى "بسام مرتضى" بعرضها بإيجاز، فذكر الموثق عنده من الرجال، والمتحد منهم من متعدد الاسم أو اللقب، وما صح عنده من الأسانيد، وما ذهب إليه من الآراء بعد المناقشة التضعيفية أو التوثيقية أو المجهولية، لبعض الرجال الذين رأى تضعيفهم أو توثيقهم أو مجهوليتهم.
بالإضافة إلى التعليق أو الإشارة إلى بعض الأمور المهمة، خصوصاً فيما يتعلق بأسانيد كتاب "كامل الزيارات" لـ"ابن قولويه"، الذي كان قد غير رأيه بالنسبة إلى من وقع في أسانيده، قبل أن يرحل إلى الرفيق الأعلى، فتغيرت على أساسه بعض الفتاوى، والآراء الفقهية، فلم يعد يرى وثاقة كل من وقع من أسانيد ذلك الكتاب، باستثناء خصوص المشايخ المروى عنهم بلا واسطة، وهو ما كان يراه المرجع محمد باقر الصدر وغيره من الفقهاء.
وعلى صعيد كتاب "كامل الزيارات" فقد أشار المحقق إلى كل من أصبح مجهولاً في أسانيده بعد أن كان موثقاً، تعليقاً أو رأساً في المتن، كما ذكر خصوص الأصحاب الذين رووا عن الرسول وأهل بيته عليهم السلام، وربما أشار إلى البعض ممن لم يروى عنهم عليهم السلام، استطراداً أو تنويهاً حسب اللزوم.
