توفي النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بعد أن بلغ ما أنزل إليه من ربه، وخلف ميراث النبوة العظيم، كلأ خصيباً بين الأمة، يضرب فيه كل وارث بحسب أخذه له أو كسله عنه، فمن أحرزه فقد فاز وغنم، ومن ضيعه فالخير كله حرم. من أجل ذلك تنافس الموفقون في تحصيل ذلك الميراث وجمع شتاته حين تفرق في الأمصار بتفرق نقلته وحملته الأوائل، فكلما حصله محصل حرص على استخراج كنوزه، ودره من قاع محيطه. ثم سلك علماء الأمصار في تقييد هذه الكنوز طرائق قداداً، بيد أن مدار رحاهم فيه على أصول ثابتة يرجعون إليها عند المدلهمات، وعند المسائل المغلقات. وكلهم واقف على استنباط الأحكام من تلك الأصول بطرق ودلالات هي المعبر والجسر إلى إدراك البغية. وحسبك بأهمية الدلالات وطرقها، أن النصوص الشرعية لا يوقف على مدلولها وثمرتها إلا بمعرفة تلك الدلالات التي سيأتي بسطها. لذا حرص علماء الأصول على تحرير حدودها وقواعدها بألخص عبارة وأخلص إشارة، وبيان مثلاتها وفروعها، وتقرير مراتبها. ولكن لما كانت تلك الدلالات وأبحاثها مفرقة، محتاجة إلى مزيد تحرير ومقارنة، وجمع ودراسة، كان إسهام عبد الله بن صالح بن محمد العبيد في هذا المضمار حيث عني بتدوين مصنفه هذا جامعاً شتات ما كتب حول هذا الموضوع، فجاء بحثه في ثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة. هذا ولم يكتف المصنف بجمع شتات ما تفرق حول موضوع الدلالات عند الأصوليين بل عني أيضاً بتحقيق النصوص التي نقلها فقام بعزو الآية بذكر السورة ورقم الآية، وأخرج الأحاديث بعزوها إلى دواوين السنة، وتكلم على الدلالات بالمعنى الأخص، وعرض آراء الأصوليين في المسائل المختلفة فيها بذكر الدلائل والتعليلات، ونظر لكثرة الأعلام، فقد قام بترجمة لغير المشتهر منها، وشرح الكلمات الغريبة كذلك، ثم أرجع كل ذلك إلى بيدرها لمن أراد المزيد. ونثر بين المباحث والمسائل فوائد وتنبيهات، رجاء أن تتم بها الفائدة، أو تزيل ما قد يوقع في لبس. وذيل البحث بفهارس هي: 1-فهرس للآيات، 2-فهرس للأحاديث والآثار، 3-فهرس للأعلام المترجم لهم، 4-فهرس للمراجع، 5-فهرس للموضوعات.
