في اللافتة النصية الأولى التي تستهل بها الكاتبة زهراء المقداد مجموعتها القصصية "روح تشبه البياض" والتي تتمظهر كبنية إهداء: "إلى روح كانت كالضوء... اغتالني الحزنُ لرحيلها دون وداع..!" تسكن حالة الحزن وتتلبيس الذات الكاتبة من تعالقها مع الذاكرة، وهي تروي، لحظة الفقد المُرة، التي يختصرها الموت بصوره وأشكاله المختلفة، الغياب، الرحيل، الفناء، فقدان الأحبة. ففي القصة الأولى التي تفتتح بها الكاتبة المجموعة "قلق العبور"، نقف على حال فتاة فقدت أخيها ولم يبقى منه سوى رسالة تركها: "أختي الغالية، تمنيت البقاء بقربك أكثر لولا هذا المرض (...) ولم أكن أقوى على إخبارك بفاجعتي وأنت الأقرب غلى قلبي (...) كُوني اقوى مني ومن الفقد..." أما في القصة التي حملت عنوان المجموعة "روح تشبه البياض" فنقع على حال أم فقدت وليدها وترك لها ابتسامة عذبة كرسالة اختزل بها سني عمره التي لم تتجاوز التسع، قذفها في قلبها ومضى دون أن يلتفت إليها، وهو يهم بالخروج إلى المدرسة، ولم تمر ساعات حتى أفاقت على "صوت دهسٍ لطفل صغير، (...) حدسي يخبرني بأن أخرج لأرى صحة الخاطر الذي عبرني قبل قليل ونفضته من قلبي سريعاً، لكن قدميّ ترفضان المضي لرؤية صغيري الذي أبصرته فيما بعد مدهوساً بشراسة.."
هذه المسافة بين التسليم القدري وبين الفعل الإنساني الخاضع لمشيئة القدر هو ما تقوم به الكاتبة مستخدمة صيغة المتكلم وهي تفعل ذلك بقليل من السرد الذي تندرج في خيوطه لعبة الظهور والاختفاء، تبعاً لمقتضى الحال السردي، وبلغة تجنح نحو الشاعرية والحوار الذاتي بما فيه من مواقف درامية ترصدها الكاتبة، في مواقف الشخصيات، وحركتها في النص، ما يعكس خبرة سردية فنية تثبت حضور الكاتبة، ويجعل من "روح تشبه البياض" لوحة فنية بامتياز.
تضمّ المجموعة (26) قصة قصيرة جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "قلق العبور"، "ومض الذاكرة"، "مسافات باردة"، "المفاجأة"، "مؤامرة العتمة"، "انكسار" (...) وقصص أخرى.
