"...وساد السراي جو من سكون رهيب، حتى إذا استعاد الجزار بعض روعه، صاح في الحاضرين: لقد أخطأت إلى ناصيف... اعترف بهذا أمامكم جميعاً، وآمر بالتوقف عن كتابعة الاحتفال بالنصر إلى أن يؤتى به من سجنه، ويجلس إلى جانبي لتقبل التهاني معي. وخرج ناصيف من سجنه، وعانقه الجزار على مرأى الجماهير التي كانت تهتف بأمانته هتافها ببطولة ولده. وجلس إلى جانب الجزار. وكان لا يقوى على قول كلمة لشدة تأثره، وعيناه الدامعتان لا تريان، في غمرة الزهو الذي يتملك الحاضرين، غير ولده الذي كان يجلس صامتاً مثله. وارتاح الجزار إلى تكفيره عن خطيئته، أي أن هذا التكفير كان ناقصاً في نظره. لقد كان هناك مجرم، كان هناك خائن لم يطله القصاص، فأين مضى حاييم؟ وأمر بجائزة لمن يأتيه به. وكان رئبال ينتظر هذا الأمر، فقال: لا حاجة للجائزة، يا صاحب الدولة... إن المجرم الذي تطلب أسيري، وسأسلمك إياه ملكاً ذا عرش وتاج وصولجان. وإذا عرف الجزار قصته، أمر بتطويفه في أسواق المدينة، بعرشه وتاجه وصولجانه، وبصلبه أخيراً على السور، ليرى الناس ذله، وليعتبر الخونة والمجرمون به.
