يجترح عبد الله الدحيلان في (أنا الملك) فعلاً إبداعياً لافتاً، فهو قد قرر أن الإنسان دونما بهرج في الشكل والادعاءات يمكن أن يكون موضوعاً لعمل سردي، لنسمَه، قصص قصيرة، وقد اتخذ لها صيغة التقريع المبطن، لما يظلل حياة الناس من تناقضات في العلامة مع الذات ومع الآخرين. بهذا المعنى يمنح المؤلف مذاقاً خاصاً، ففي القصة التي اتخذ منها عنوان المجموعة (أنا الملك) البطل متهتك وطاغية مبتذل لا يتغير عندما يتغير المكان، فحتى وهو في السجن يبقى سادياً في قسوته "...- لمن الملك هنا؟ -لك يا سيدي.. فيبصق في وجه العبد أما مهن، ويقهقه. داعياً جميع من في القاعة إلى الضحك...". أما في قصة "الأوبة" يحكي المؤلف حالة التمايز بين الوحشية والحضارة لشخص عاش فترة طويلة في جزيرة معزولة، وحين تتاح له فرصة العودة للحضارة والحياة المدنية يرفضها ويعود للجزيرة، "في لحظة خاطفة، أعطاهم ظهره، أمسك بحد السفينة الحديدي جيداً، رفع رجليه ودفع نفسه بقوة إلى عمق البحر، وراح يسبح... عائداً من حيث أتى!". وكأن المؤلف هنا يفهم الفعل على أنه فعل رمزي ساخر يوطئ لفهم الذات البشرية في ضوء وجودها الواقعي، لا المثالي مما يشي بهندسة كتابية صارمة. وينسحب ذلك على بعتة نصوص المجموعة البالغ عددها خمسة عشرة، وقد تراوحت بين الطول والقصر، نذكر من عناوينها: "مدينة الألعاب"، "ملطخة"،"تفاح الجنة"، "ضحية"، "المظلة"...الخ.
