عاش داي سيجي مرحلة من أكثر مراحل التاريخ الصيني اضطراباً وانغلاقاً، إنها المرحلة التي توجت بالثورة الثقافية، كان داي سيجي، الطالب الجامعي، واحداً من الذين "أعيد تأهيلهم" إذ أجبروا على التوقف عن الدراسة، والذهاب إلى مناطق الريف لممارسة "الحياة الثورية" مع الفلاحين. عرفت تلك المرحلة أسوأ إيديولوجيات السياسة والحكم، وتركت تأثيرها على معظم الذين عاشواها.
ذهب داي سيجي إلى فرنسا لدراسة الإخراج السينمائي، وصار مخرجاً معروفاً له العديد من الأفلام، ولكن يبدو أنه أراد دائماً أن يكتب عن مرحلة "الثورة الثقافية" تلك، فكتب عنها روايته الأولى "بالزاك والخياطة الصينية الصغيرة" التي أثارت إعجاباً كبيراً، وتم ترشيحها لجائزة "غونكور". ثم كتب هذه الرواية متناولاً الفساد والرشوة والإذلال في مرحلة الحكم الماوي، وكذلك الجهل والظلم والسجون، في إطار قريب من السخرية السوداء.
لقيت هذه الرواية أيضاً اهتماماً من النقاد والقراء، وحصلت على جائزة "فومينا" المعروفة للرواية.
