يمثل هذا الكتاب (شمس العلوم ودواء كلام العرب من الكلوم) موسوعة ضخمة في تاريخ المعاجم العربية، يقوم على نظام الأبنية بترتيب حروف الهجاء وأول الكلمات، ويحرس كل كلمة، تجنباً للتصحيف، بنقطها وشكلها، ويجعلها مع جنسها ويردها إلى أصلها، ويجعل لكل حرف من حروف المعجم كتاباً، ولكل حرف معه باباً، ولكل باب شطرين، أسماء وأفعالاً، ولكل كلمة من تلك الأسماء والأفعال وزناً وفعالاً. يتضمن الكتاب ما سنح من ذكر ملوك العرب، ومنافع الأشجار وطبائع الأحجار، وأيسر اليسير من علم القرآن والتفسير، وما وافق من الأخبار والأنساب وعلم الحساب، وأصول الأحكام والحلال والحرام، وينسب ما يذكره إلى أول من صنفه من فقهاء الإسلام، ويسند ما يرويه إلى أهل الفضل والعلم والإيمان من خيار الصحابة وتابعيهم، ويذكر ما سنح من أصول عبارة الأحلام المأخوذة من الأمثال المضروبة في كلام الله تعالى وكلام أنبيائه عليهم السلام، وما تجري عليه ألسنة العوام، ويفسر ما لابد منه من علم النجوم. يخص الكتاب اليمن بمعلومات تاريخية بأسماء الملوك والملكات، وجغرافية بأسماء المناطق والمدن والجبال، ولغوية بمفردات حميرية قديمة أو ترد في نقوش المسند واللهجات اليمنية، والأمثال الحميرية باللهجة الدارجة، مع صورة خط المسند، ويذكر الكلام الحميري المؤيد بنقوش المسند المكتشفة حديثاً، وبالأخبار والأشعار.
