تقع أحداث الرواية فى عام 2005 . تحكى عن رحلة سياحية للأقصر وأسوان هى فى الواقع جائزة لمسابقة فى إحدى المجلات الثقافية المصرية، الفائزون بهذه الرحلة هم خليط من الشخوص تقريباً كلهم ينتمون إلى الطبقة المتوسطة، تجمع غالبيتهم الثقافة عدا أفراد قلائل : شاعر موهوب يفتقد للحظ، أسرة من زوج وزوجتة التى تخدعه، مطلقة جميلة، شاب دارس للتاريخ ، أرملة و إبنتيها، واحدة ستحب الزوج المخدوع والثانية ستقع فى حب الشاب السابق ذكره أما هو فلن يعيرها إهتماماً لأنه لا يستطع تجاوز قصة حب قديمة، زوجة تحب زوجها بحق أما بالنسبة له فهى لا تتعدى كونها خادمة وأم لأولاده، زوج و زوجة يجسدان العلاقة المثالية للزواج و الحب، ورجل ستينى تجسيد للبيروقراطية والروتين، مشرف الرحلة وأخيراً المرشد السياحى. خلال رحلة القطار التى تبلغ 10 ساعات يسترجع كل واحد منهم قصة حياته كشريط سينمائى فى إطار سردى تشويقى و عندما يصلون جميعاً إلى الجنوب تبدأ التفاعلات بينهم، من إعجاب هنا و حب هناك و نفور من جهة أخرى، و فى هذا الجزء تبدأ فقرات الرحلة من مزارات سياحية فى كل مدينة على حدة، معبد الاقصر، الكرنك، فيله ... الخ، ويحدث إسقاط على التاريخ الحديث من خلال التاريخ القديم، بجانب مناقشات تاريخية وسياسية وإجتماعية تحدث من خلال تفاعل الشخوص مع بعضها البعض. ويأتى مشهد النهاية الموحى لتحدُث فيه مفاجآت ونبوءات ضمنية لمستقبل كل فرد على حدة. الرواية تحطم التابوهات الثلاث: السياسة والجنس والدين، وتعمُد إلى تقنية تداخُل الأزمنة. رواية مسكونة بأوجاع الحياة، ونص روائى تتصارع فيه العواطف وتقترب فصوله من الشعر.
