بأي الرغبات قدرت، أن ألج غمرة هذا السحر، وليس لي غير الشغف يقود خطوي إليه وفيه. وفي خاطري يتردد رجع صدى لمغناة قديمة عن الزمان والمكان والإنسان، تركها الأنباط في قلب الصحراء، قبل أن يطووا تاريخهم ويرتحلوا. وما كان لي أن أتشرب هذا السحر دفقة واحدة. فهو يتصاعد في الخلايا، كالنسغ لهثة لهثة، ولهفة إثر لهفة. واستذكرت القول، بأن المتناهي في الصغر أو أحد مكامن العظمة. لم تكن البتراء متناهية في الصغر، لكنها بين ممالك زمانها كانت أصغرها، وعلى صغرها كانت الأكثر إيحاء بالعظمة... عظمة الإحساس المتفرد بالذات. وربما لم يتبادر إلى ذهن أنباطها، بأن تعريفاً للفن سيأتي بعد زمانهم، يكون ببساطته ودلالته، قادراً على أن تمثل ما فعلوا، وهو أن الفن هو الطبيعة مضافاً إليها الإنسان. لكنهم قبل هذا التعريف تمكنوا من تأكيد دلالته في مدينتهم، حين مزجوا بين إبداعية الطبيعة السرمدية وبين إبداعية الإنسان المتكيفة، فتركوا وراءهم ما يحير العقل، ويعجز الوصف. وككل مكابدة فنية حقة، اختاروا الأصعب ليصلوا عبره إلى الأجمل.
