هذا كتاب دونه أستاذان أمريكيان، كانا أول بعثة علمية أمريكية تزور الأردن في شهري شباط وآذار من عام 1902. فقد انطلقا من صور على ساحل البحر المتوسط ثم عبرا الجبال اللبنانية إلى منابع نهر الأردن فمجراه فالسلسلة الشرقية لشرق الأردن حتى البتراء. وكتبا مشاهداتهما عبر الأرض، مع نبذ يسيرة جداً عن الإنسان، واهتما بالآثار والتاريخ، وأسماء الدول التي هيمنت على هذه البقعة أو تلك من الأرض الأردنية، مع الإشارة إلى ما ورد في التوراة أو المصادر الأخرى عن الأحداث والمواقع.
ونجد أن الروايات التوراتية هي الأساس الذي يؤمن به علماء الغرب، وكأنها حقيقة لاشية فيها، رغم أنها تخالف المنطق وتجافي حقائق التاريخ والآثار، وتبدو واهنة أمام الأدلة الجديدة التي ظهرت من الآثار والنصوص هنا وهناك وفوق الأرض الأردنية وخارجها.
وقد قسم المؤلفان كتابهما إلى جزئين أسميا الأولى: وادي الأردن وأسميا الثاني: البتراء حيث أعطوا تفصيلات واضحة وممتازة عنها. كما قسما كل جزء إلى فصول يشمل كل فصل مرحلة من مراحل الرحلة.
ومن خلال مطالعة الكتاب نجد مدى اهتمام المؤلفين بالأردن وجه لهذه الأرض، وتغنيهما بجمالها، وحبهم للبتراء ووصفهم لها بما يفوق حب أي شخص لأجمل معشوقة بين يديه ويخيل للقارئ أنهما أردنيان منتميين لتراب الأردن.
