يُعنى الاقتصاد البيئي بكيفية تأثير النشاط الاقتصادي والسياسة على البيئة التي نعيش فيها. يحدث التلوث نتيجة جانب من النشاط الإنتاجي والاستهلاك المنزلي، إلا أن التلوث ليس نتيجة حتمية للنشاط الاقتصادي؛ فللسياسات البيئية أن تلزم الشركات الملوثة للبيئة بتنظيف انبعاثاتها، وأن تشجع الناس على تغيير سلوكياتهم، إلا أن هذه التدابير تتضمن بعض التكاليف؛ مثل تركيب أجهزة مكافحة التلوث. لذا توجد مقايضة: بيئة أنظف ولكن نظير تكاليف اقتصادية عالية.
