يدرس هذا الكتاب جانبيه كبيرين مهمّين من جوانب سدانة إحسان عبّاس لتراثنا العربيّ الذي عني به منذ مطلع حياته العلميّة عنايةً قد لا تعدلها عناية. الأوّل في النقد كما يتجلّى في سِفره الأنموذج "تاريخ النقد الأدبيّ عند العرب: نقد الشعر من القرن الثاني حتّى القرن الثامن الهجريّ"، وفي مقالاته البواكير، التي كانت بشارة خير بميلاد ذلك الكتاب، والتي رأيت أن يضمّها الكتاب الحاضر لأهميّتها الكبيرة في مسيرة صاحبها الفكريّة وفي إلقاء الضوء على حقيقة نقدنا وما فيه من مسائل لافتة. والآخر: تحقيق الشعر الذي برع فيه-وفي تحقيق النثر أيضاً-هذا العالم الجليل براعة متميّزة أحاطت بجوانبه كافّةً، ورسمة أنموذجاً علميّاً دقيقاً لما يجب أن يكون عليه التحقيق سواء في الذي حقّق أم في بحوثه ومقالاته عن بعض ما حقّقه غيره من كنوز التراث، التي اكتفيت بإيراد نموذجين منها أردفتهما بمقالة المهمّ "نظرة في التراث" الذي ينبي بوضوح عن موقفه من التراث إزاء المواقف الأخرى.
