بدلاً من الإصرار على المشاهد بأن يتعلم كيف يستجيب لمجموعة من الشواهد الفنية القيمة، يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يطرح طريقة للتفكير والتأمل في الفن تعينه على أن يكون اكتشافه الجمالية الخاصة، وأن يمتلك من التجربة ما يساعده في اكتساب رؤية شخصية ومباشرة بحيث يقوم بين العمل الفني والمشاهد حوار حوار الرؤية. بأسلوب متميز بالوضوح، ومدعم بعشرات الصور، يعرض المؤلف وهو فنان وأستاذ جامعي، المعضلات الجمالية والتقنية المعقدة التي هي الأساس في أي فهم جاد للفنون المرئية، ويتصدى لشرحها. ومعالجاته تتضمن مشكلات الجمال، والشكل والمضمون في الرسم والنحت، وطبيعة التشخيص والتجريد في الفن في البعدين وفي الأبعاد الثلاثة. على العموم أن أطروحة هذا الكتاب هي أن التذوق الفني هو حوار رؤية بين المشاهد والعمل الفني الذي أمامه.. حوار يتطلب محاوراً ملماً، مدركاً ومتجاوباً من ناحية، والعمل الفني من ناحية أخرى. والطرف الثالث، أي الناقد أو المدرس، إنما يكون وسيطاً لتقديم المحاور إلى العمل، وإعداده لتذوقه، ولكن ليس بوسعه أن يفعل أكثر من ذلك، لأن تذوق الفن لا يمكن تلقينه. فهو ينمو في المشاهد حين يكون مستعداً له، ولن ينمو إلا إذا قام الاتصال المستمر بين المتحسن والعم الفني.
