اجتاحت جماعات من المغول خلال القرن الثالث عشرللميلاد بلاد فارسالممتدة من وسط آسيا إلى العراق.ونجم عن هذا الاجتياح الكبيرللمحاربين البدوالقادمين من داخل سهول آسيا، مقتل العديد من الناس وتشريدهم بمن فيهم الإسماعيليون. وأسهم سقوط قلعة آلموت الإسماعيلية عام 1296 وما أعقبها من تدمير حوالى مئتي حصن، في وضع حد لاستقلال الإسماعيليين في بلاد فارس. إلا أن عدداً قليلاً من الإسماعيليين الفرس، استطاع خلافاً لما أشيع وذكر عن إبادة الإسماعيلية، الصمود في وجه الغزو المغولي، والحفاظ على هويته الدينية بالاعتماد على أسس العقيدة الدينية الإسماعيلية المسماة: "الدعوة". يعرض هذا الكتاب تطوّر الدعوة الإسماعيلية في المفهوم التاريخي، وتبيّن الكاتبة أهمية هذه العقيدة ("الدعوة") في مساعدة الإسماعيليين الفرس على المحافظة على هويتهم الدينية وعلى اتحاد جماعتهم وسط الظروف الصعبة التي مروا بها. وكان من أهم المراجع التي استشارتها الكاتبة لهذه الدراسة، الشاعر شمسالدين، المعروف باسم نزاري قوهستاني.وبعد تحليلهالعمله، "سفرنامه"، الذي يصف رحلة الشاعر من قوهستان إلى ترانسقوقازيا حوالىعام 1280، تمكنت الكاتبة للمرة الأولى من أن تبرهن وجود الدعوة الإسماعيلية،وبالتالي استمرار التقاليد الإسماعيلية في بلاد الفرس في ظل حكم المغول.
