اسم الشاب تريسي، واسم الفتاة لورا، والنمر يُدعى (بالطبع) نمر تريسي. عندما جاء تريسي إلى نيويورك للعمل لدى وكالة سيفانغ لبيع القهوة بالجملة، لم يكن ينوي قضاء بقية عمره هناك بنقل أكياس القهوة. وعندما التقت لورا بتريسي في كافتيريا الوجبات الخفيفة، لم يخطر لها الوقوع في الحبّ. وعندما انخرط الدكتور بنجتزر، المحلل النفسي، بالحديث مع تريسي عن هذا.. هذا النمر؛ لم يعتقد أحد أنّ للنمر وجوداً حقيقياً. لكن، وبعد مضي بعض الوقت، كان نمر تريسي يركض على امتداد شارع ماديسون، تلاحقه عربة مصفحَّة ورجال الشرطة. كانت الصحف تحاول إجراء مقابلة مع تريسي، وتريسي كان يبحث عن لورا.. وإثر ذلك لم تعد نيويورك هي نيويورك كما كانت. حاول وليم سارويان، في كل ما كتب، أن يصوّر إنسان القرن العشرين في صراعه مع الغول الذي صنعه بيديه: الآلة. وعلى الرغم من أنه كتب معظم انتاجه في وقت مبكّر من القرن وقبل أن يصل تعقيد الحياة الصناعية والتقدم الكنولوجي إلى ما وصل إليه الآن، إلّا أن كتاباته كانت خير تعبير عن تطلع الإنسان إلى الانتصار على هذا الغول الذي صنعه بنفسه، لكنه تنامى وكبر بحيث أخذ يسحق كل مسحة إنسانية على وجه هذه اليابسة. وهكذا جعل سارويان الموضوع الرئيسي لكل كتاباته انتصار الخير الطفولي على المجتمع المادي بكل ما فيه من شرور وفساد؛ فتراوحت كتاباته بين العفوية النابضة بالحياة والوجدانية التي تتدنى إلى مستوى الانغماس الهلامي بالذات الإنسانية.
