إذا كان "المتكلم في الرواية"، حسب تعبير ميخائيل باختين، "هو دائما، وبدرجات مختلفة، مُنتج إيديولوجيا وكلماته هي دائماً عينة إيديولوجية"، فإن صوت الراوي الذي هو صوت الكاتبة/ الدكتورة. نادية القناعي في «عندما خرست الموسيقى» يحدد منذ الصفحة الأولى من الرواية طبيعة النظرة إلى الآخر حتى نكاد نلمس تطابقاً لوجهات النظر، بحيث تبدو وجهة نظر "زمزم" الشخصية الرئيسية في العمل، رغم مرورها بمصفاة الراوي، بارزة ومهيمنة تتمثل في نزعة حول احتواء الآخر مهما كان لونه وجنسه ومذهبه ودينه.
وفي الرواية تبدو شخصية "زمزم" مشرفة الصفحات الاجتماعية في إحدى الجرائد المحلية متزنة، مثقفة، تعشق الموسيقى، وقارئة للأدب، وهي أيضاً ناجحة في عملها، تتلقى رسائل القراء وتستجيب لمشكلاتهم وتكون بمثابة الدواء لكثير من القلوب المتعبة، والنفوس المتشظية، والعقول الحائرة. ولكنها، أي "زمزم" هي كالطبيب الذي يداوي الناس وهو عليلٌ، تفقّد زمزم والدها، ثم والدتها، ثم يجمعها القدر بـ "عمر" الطبيب الذي ينحدر من عائلة مرموقة، وكما جمعهما الحبّ، سوف يفرقهما المذهب؟!. ومن هنا تعالج الروائية العديد من المشكلات المزمنة، حول الاختلاف والنظرة إلى الآخر، وتقدم مقاربة مختلفة تبدو فيها على درجة عالية من الإحساس بالمسؤولية لما دار ويدور في عالمنا العربي والإسلامي من نزاعات ما تنفك تطاردنا وتتحكم بمصيرنا ومستقبلنا، وكأنها تقول لنا ما لم ننجح في التحرر منها سنبقى أسراها وضحاياها.
تقول الروائية في ثنايا عملها: "... الناس يصدّقون الوهم ويغفلون عن الحقيقة.. ينساقون وراء الماضي الذي لم يحضروه إلا من خلال الكتب أو من خلال ما سمعوه.. وينسون أنهم هنا في هذا المكان في هذه البقعة وفي هذه الساعة.. نحن شهود هذا العصر فلنشهدْه بضمير.. لنسير فيه باستقامة الحاضر لا باعوجاج الأمس، الذي كان وما كنّا فيه.
إن الأجيال الآتية وراءنا.. نحن من سيحمل أوزار معاركهم التي أرجّح أنها ستكون امتداداً لحماقاتنا..".
