أليكسي مكسيموفيتش بيشكوف، ويعرف بمكسيم غوركي (28 مارس 1868 - 18 يونيو 1936)، أديب وناشط سياسي ماركسي روسي، مؤسس مدرسة الواقعية الاشتراكية التي تجسد النظرة الماركسية للأدب حيث يرى أن الأدب مبني على النشاط الاقتصادي في نشأته ونموه وتطوره، وأنه يؤثر في المجتمع بقوته الخاصة، لذلك ينبغي توظيفه في خدمة المجتمع.
ولد في نجني نوفجراد عام 1868، وأصبح يتيم الأب والأم وهو في التاسعة من عمره، فتولت جدته تربيته، وكان لهذه الجدة أسلوب قصصي ممتاز، مما صقل مواهبه القصصية.
وبعد وفاة جدته تأثر لذلك تأثرأ كبيراً مما جعله يحاول الانتحار.
تعنى كلمة جوركى باللغة الروسية "المر" وقد اختارها الكاتب لقبا مستعارا له من واقع المرارة التي كان يعانى منها الشعب الروسى تحت الحكم القيصرى والتي شاهدها بعينه خلال المسيرة الطويلة التي قطعها بحثا عن القوت ، وقد انعكس هذا الواقع المرير يشكل واضح على كتاباته وبشكل خاص في رائعته "الأم".
أهم أعماله: - رواية الأم.
- رواية الطفولة.
- مسرحية الحضيض.
- قصيدة "انشودة نذير العاصفة".
- الطفولة 1913-1914 - الأعداء؛دراما؛1906 - جامعاتي 1923 بالإضافة للعديد من المسرحيات والقصص والمقالات.

هذا هو " الحضيض " الذى صوره ماكسيم جوركى في مسرحيته العظيمة التى بلغت ذروة الشهرة في دنيا المسرح والدراما . عشرة أشخاص يعيشون كلهم معاً في غرفة كئيبة مظلمة تحت الأرض ، عشرة أشخاص من المنبوذين أو ممن يسمون " حثالة " المجتمع ، خليط غريب من أحط الطبقات التى كانت تكون الغالبية العظمى للشعب الروسى في ذلك الحين . ومن بين هؤلاء العشرة امرأة يحتضرها الموت وتلفظ أنفاسها الأخيرة . ويظل شبح الموت الرهيب يخيم على الغرفة طوال الفصلين الاوليين إلى أن تقضي نحبها . هذا هو الحضيض الذى يقدمة لنا جوركى ، وهو حضيض لم يستمده من قراءاته ولا من تحرياته واستقصاءاته ، ولا حتى من مشاهداته ، وإنما هو حضيض عاش فيه وخبره وبلاه وذاق مرارته وتجرع غصصه . هذه أحداث عاشها الكاتب بواقعية من نوع معين .
