الأحوال الشخصية هي أهم القضايا التي تعترض حياة المؤمنين في الكنيسة الأرثوذكسية وباقي الكنائس أو حتى المجتمعات والدول. فحرية الرأي والمعتقد والعولمة والتقدم في العلوم والكمبيوتر، وانتفاضة المرأة المتصاعدة في المطالبة بحقوقها وخروجها من الكبت والحرمان وعدم المساواة التي كانت تعاني منها، ساعد في شكل ملحوظ على ازدياد مشاكل الأحوال الشخصية والطلاق وغيرها...
كل هذه العوامل دفعت بالكنيسة الأنطاكية الأرثوذكسية إلى دراسة قانون الأحوال الشخصية الأرثوذكسي، وتعديله بما يتناسب مع المشاكل القائمة حديثاً في عصرنا، وتأمين المساواة بين الرجل والمرأة وحماية العائلة بشكل رئيسي...
خطوة قام بها البطريرك إغناطيوس الرابع هزيم، مع سائر السادة المطارنة والأساقفة، في مجال تطوير قانون الأحوال الشخصية، إذ أقدموا بتاريخ 16 تشرين الأول 2003 على تعديله، وقد ترك هذا العمل انطباعاً جيداً حتى لدى باقي الكنائس...
كان تعديل القانون الخطوة الأولى، حينها كنت أتابع تحصيلي العلمي للحصول على الدكتوراه في القانون من جامعات روما ففكرت أني منتسب إلى الكنيسة الأرثوذكسية، التي أسسها القديسان بطرس وبولس، وهي تحتاج إلى مشرعين ومفسرين لقوانينها إضافة إلى توفر المؤرخين واللاهوتيين والليتورجيين لديها.
فالتاريخ يذكر بالماضي واللاهوت يقوي الإيمان ويسنده لكن التاريخ واللاهوت وغيرهما على حد سواء لا يبقون دون قانون، وهو عمود يمدهم بالحاضر والمستقبل. ولما كانت الكنائس الأرثوذكسية تفتقر إلى قانونيين ومشرعين وهذه ثغرة يجب معالجتها بشكل مدروس.
فقد سعى "أنطونيو فرح" للقيام بتفسير قانون الأحوال الشخصية الأرثوذكسي، والشرح جاء تفصيلياً وليس عاماً، يعمل على تفسير المواد مادة مادة كي تساعد كل صاحب اختصاص أو قاض أو محام أو أسقف أو كاهن أو مؤمن عادي أو مطلع.. على فهم القانون الأرثوذكسي بشكل مبسط ولغة لا تصعب على أحد.
يتضمن الكتاب إضافة إلى المقدمة، القسم الأول والثاني وهما يضمان شرحاً دقيقاً للمواد في قانون الأحوال الشخصية الأرثوذكسي، والقسم الثالث الذي يضم أصول المحاكمات المعمول بها في الكنيسة الأنطاكية الأرثوذكسية، وملحقاً لنصوص قوانين الأحوال الشخصية لدى الطوائف المسيحية في لبنان والخاتمة.
