يختص هذا الكتاب بماهية وخواص ومنافع الأعشاب والنباتات ويرتكز في مادته على ما صنفه واحد من أهم الأطباء في القرنين الخامس – السابع للهجرة وهو أبو مروان عبد الملك بن أبي العلاء وزهر المتوفي سنة (557ه / 1161م)، والذي ترك عدداً من الكتب الطبية، أبرزها: "التيسير في المداواة والتدبير" وقد صنفه كي يتناول فيه فن المحافظة على صحة الإنسان، فأحدث تطوراً هائلاً في عالم الطب في عصره حتى قيل عنه: "إنه لم يكن في زمانه من يماثله، أو يفوقه في صناعته الطبية". من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب ليحمل بين دفتيه ما ابتكره أبو مروان زهر من تجارب في فن التداوي بالأعشاب وبخاصة ما عرف بـ "الأدوية المفردة والمركبة" وأصنافها المختلفة والتي تعتمد على الأعشاب والنباتات الطبية التي كانت معروفة في زمانه وبقيت حتى زماننا هذا.
وبناءً على ما تقدم يشتمل هذا الكتاب على جميع الأعشاب الطبية التي ذكرت في "التيسير" حصراً، وقد بلغ مجموعها (167) عشباً، مع ذكر لأهم فوائدها وطرق استعمالها.
