أديب وكاتب سوري ولد في مدينة الرقة سنة 1918، عمل في الطب والسياسة إضافة للأدب.
درس في الرقة وحلب ودمشق وتخرج من جامعة دمشق - طبيباً عام 1945.
انتخب نائباً عن الرقة عام 1947.
تولى عدداً من المناصب الوزارية في وزارة الثقافة والوزارة الخارجية والإعلام عام 1962, يعد أحد أهم أعلام القصة والرواية في سوريا والعالم العربي، وقد أصدر أول مجموعاته القصصية عام 1948 بعنوان بنت الساحرة.
و كان له أقاصيص أخرى مثل ساعة الملازم و قناديل إشبييلية.
كتب عبد السلام العجيلي القصة والرواية والشعر والمقالة.
بلغ عدد أعماله أربعة وأربعين كتاباً حتى 2005 من أهمها الليالي والنجوم (شعر 1951)، باسمة بين الدموع (رواية 1958)، الحب والنفس (قصص 1959)، فارس مدينة القنطرة (قصص 1971)، أزاهير تشرين المدماة (قصص 1974)، في كل واد عصا (مقالات 1984).
أحاديث الطبيب (قصص 1997)، ومجهولة على الطريق (قصص 1997).
تعتبر كتابات الكاتب الكبير العجيلي في المجال الادبي من ضمن أغنى وأهم الروايات الأدبية العربية في تاريخ الأدب العربي وقد ترجمت معظم أعماله إلى اللغات الإنكليزية والفرنسية والإيطالية والأسبانية والروسية، وتدرس العديد من أعماله في الجامعات والمدارس ويعد مرجع من مراجع الادب العربي.

في هذا الكتاب سجل عبد السلام العجيلي الطبيب والأديب والنائب السابق والوزير السابق ذكرياته الشخصية من مرحلة ممارسته للنشاط السياسي ، وهي مرحلة توليه عدداً من المناصب الوزارية في بلده سـوريـة في العام 1962. نبذة النيل والفرات: ذكريات أيام السياسة لم يردها صاحبها، عبد السلام العجيلي ذكريات سياسية، لأن ما يتكلم عنه على هذه الصفحات ليس تسجيل لأحداث سياسية بحتة، إنه صورة عن حياته في فترة عمله السياسي بجوانبها المختلفة. والجانب السياسي أحد هذه الجوانب. كان العجيلي في كتابه هذا كاتباً ومفكراً وباحثاً في العلاقات السياسية لبلده سورية مع البلدان الأخرى من عربية وأجنبية. هو لم يكن مؤرخ سياسة، بل كان مصوراً للعلاقات الإنسانية بين شخصه وبين من وضعتهم ظروف الرحلة التي يروي ذكرياتها في دائرة اتصالاته واهتماماته. فعل ذلك بأسلوبه الممتع والمشوق الذي اشتهر به في مؤلفاته وأحاديثه. هذا ما يؤهل كتابه هذا إلى أن يكون أثراً أدبياً يقرأ كما تقرأ القصص والروايات، وإن كان محتواه حقائق واقعية لا أثر فيها لتزيّد الفنان أو الخيال الروائي والقاص.
