لقد اشتملت "مسيرة السلام" على لحظات فرح ولحظات يأس، وعلى مظاهر الصداقة وعلى مظاهر عداء، وكانت هناك فترات صعبة ومثيرة للأعصاب، كما كانت هناك لحظات جميلة من السعادة والأمل.
لقد جرت المحادثات في دول وقارات مختلفة، وكانت القدس والقاهرة وواشنطن حلبات النشاطات الرئيسية، ولكن لقاءات جرت أيضاً في الرباط وسالزبورغ ونيويورك ولندن وبروكسل وليدز، وشارك في هذه اللقاءات، رؤساء دول ورؤساء حكومات ووزراء خارجية ووزراء دفاع ومستشارون قانونيون ومسؤولون، وكان، من بين أبطال هذه الدراما، يهود وعرب وأميركيون وزعماء أمم أمثال كارتر والسادات وبيغن وفانس و"غيرهم".
لقد قادني حسن حظي، بصفتي وزير دفاع "دولة" "إسرائيل"، لاكون شريكاً في هذا العمل التاريخي، منذ بدايته، وكنت طرفاً في الإتصالات الشخصية والمحادثات الرسمية وغير الرسمية معاً، وترأست وفوداً عسكرية ومدنية، وشاهدت الأم الوضع التي رافقت التوقيع على معاهدة السلام، وخروجها إلى العالم كحقيقة "ثابتة" في آذار 1979. ,p> لقد استطعت رسم الأحداث، التي وقعت خلال 15 شهراً من المفاوضات المضنية، عن طريق تحليل الوثائق والبروتوكولات وتقديم التقديرات، حول مراحل ونقاط، ولكن "السلام" في نظري، هو أكثر من كومة من الأوراق والملفات والوثائق.
لقد وقف وراء البنود الرئيسية والفرعية، الواردة في الإتفاقيات الدولية، أشخاص من بني البشر من جانبي الحدود، وأود، في كتابي هذا إبراز الجانب الإنساني للسلام، ولن يكون الوصف شاملاً للمسيرة كلها، بل هو وصف شخصي للأحداث مثلما رأيتها من وجهة نظري، والعبارات المنسوبة لأشخاص ورد ذكرهم في الكتاب، أقدمها من ذاكرتي وعلى مسؤوليتي فقط، أما وصف إنطباعاتي كوزير للدفاع فإني أتركه لفرصة أخرى.
