يتناول موضوعاً من أكثر الموضوعات حساسية في المجتمعات بشكل عام والعربية منها بوجه خاص، ألا وهو الأبعاد الاجتماعية المرتبطة بتعاطي المخدرات، مقروناً بدراسة ميدانية بمؤسسات علاج وتأهيل المدمنين، مما أثرى البحث وربطه بالواقع بصورة موضوعية من خلال استخدام الاستبيان ومقياس الاتجاه والمقابلة المتعمقة لمفردات عينة البحث. وقد تناول الكتاب استعراضاً سريعا لبعض الدراسات السابقة المحلية والعربية والعالمية في الموضوع، ثم عرج على المداخل النظرية المفسرة لظاهرة تعاطي المخدرات والإدمان عليها. ثم تناول ظاهرة تعاطي المخدرات كمشكلة اجتماعية استعرض فيها نبذة تاريخية عن المخدرات، وأنواعها، والأسباب المؤدية لتعاطي المخدرات والإدمان عليها، والآثار المترتبة على تعاطي المخدرات، مع إلقاء الضوء على المجتمع الليبي بصورة خاصة. ولعل من أهم ما تناوله الكتاب العوامل المؤدية لتناول المخدرات ودور الفرد، وجماعة الأصدقاء، والمدرسة، والعمل، ووسائل الإعلام، ثم تناول التشريعات الخاصة بمكافحة تعاطي المخدرات. ثم الآثار الجسمية والصحية والنفسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية لتعاطي المخدرات. ثم قامت المؤلفة بتفسير النتائج ذات العلاقة بين المتغيرات والعوامل المؤدية لتعاطي المخدرات، حيث اشتملت الدراسة على عدد كبير من المتغيرات التي تم الربط بينها في شكل عنقودي حسب أصول البحث العلمي، وتعد من أوائل الدراسات التي تشمل هذا الكم من المتغيرات للخروج برؤية علمية وواقعية للأبعاد الاجتماعية لتعاطي المخدرات والإدمان عليها. كما تنفرد هذه الدراسة بعمل مقابلات متعمقة مع إناث من مدمني المخدرات وهذا ما لم تسبق إليه دراسة في المجتمع الليبي، نظراً لخصوصية هذا المجتمع ووجود قيود وعادات وتقاليد اجتماعية صارمة تحكمه.
