كان أمير المؤمنين عليٌّ بن أبي طالب مشرع الفصاحة وموردها ، ومنشأ البلاغة ومولدها ، عنه أخذت قوانينها وبكلامه استعان كل واعظ بليغ ، ولأنّ كلامه عليه مسحة من العلم الإلهي وفيه عبقة من الكلام النبوي استحسن الكاتب أن يبدأ بتأليف كتاب يحتوي على مختار كلام مولانا أمير المؤمنين في جميع فنونه، من خطب وكتب ومواعظ وآداب ، علماً أن ذلك يتضمن عجائب البلاغة ، وغرائب الفصاحة وجواهر العربية ، وثواقب الكلم الدينية والدنيوية ما لا يوجد مجتمِعاً في كلام، ولا مجموع الأطراف في كتاب. ورأى أن كلامه عليه السلام يدور على أقطاب ثلاثة : أولها الخطب والأوامر ، وثانيها الكتب والرسائل وثالثها الحكم والمواعظ . ولذلك صنف لكل ذلك باباً مفصلاً. والكتاب بأبوابه يفتح للناظر أبواب البلاغة ، ففيه حاجة العالم والمتعلم وبغية البليغ والزاهد وفيه ما هو بلال كل غلة وجلاء كل شبهة .
