ربما لا يعرف الكثير من أبناء الاجيال الجديدة عن صلاح سالم سوى إسم الطريق الدائري الذي التف حول شرقي القاهرة في أوائل الستينات من القرن الماضي، والذي حمل إسمه تخليدًا لذكراه، فلا يتذكرون أنه أحد قادة الضباط الأحرار الذين خططوا ونفذوا (الحركة المباركة) عشية 23 يوليو 1952، وأنه أحد أعضاء اللجنة التنفيذية التسعة، أو العشرة، التي قادت الحركة وتحولت إلى (مجلس قيادة الثورة) فور نجاح الحركة وتحولها إلى ثورة وطنية غيرت وجه الوطن، لذلك تصبح مذكراته شهادة مهمة على ما شارك فيه من أحداث ووقائع، وما شهده خلال السنوات الأولى والخطيرة من تاريخ الثورة، وفي أدق مراحلها (1948 - 1962)، خاصة وأنه أصبح المسئول عن قضية السودان. وقد لا نغالي إن قلنا إن الكثير من أبناء الأجيال الشابة لا يعرفون أن مصر والسودان كانتا دولة واحدة لنحو قرن وثلث من الزمان (1822 - 1955) أي منذ أن اتم "محمد علي" ضم بلاد السودان وممالكه إلى باشوية مصر، والتي صارت خديوية، فسلطنة واحدة، ثم مملكة واحدة في العهد الملكي، عرفت أدبيًا وشعبيًا بدولة وادي النيل، والتي خضعت للاحتلال البريطاني الذي استمر حتى انفصال السودان واستقلاله في نهاية عام 1955 وبداية عام 1956، ومن ثم فإن تاريخ سودان وادي النيل الحديث يعد جزءًا عزيزًا من تاريخ دولة وادي النيل الواحدة. أحمد زكريا الشلق.
