متحدياً القرارات الحكومية، يجلس شاب أميركي مع إرهابيين وجهاً لوجه ويحاورهم ويجول أراضي العدو ليستكشف منها حقائق حول الشبان الشرق أوسطيين ويكشف ثقافة فئوية تخالف المألوف.
سافر "جاريد كوهن"، الطالب في جامعة ستانفورد، إلى أنحاء أفريقيا كافة بغية التعمق في أوضاع البلاد الراهنة من خلال مشاهدتها بالعين المجردة، فيهرب مع الثوار في الكونغو ويواجه تهديدات عدة من أسياد الحرب المحليين ويشهد على تداعيات العنف المذهبي المستشري منذ عقود، ولما رأى عنف الإسلاميين المتطرفين ينهش أفريقيا توصل إلى أن فهم هذه الظاهرة يتطلب منه التوجه إلى الشرق الأوسط.
فتابع دروساً باللغة العربية في جامعة أوكسفورد التي يرتادها بمنحة لرودوس، وراح يطالع بنهم كتباً عن تاريخ الشرق الأوسط وثقافته، ثم في العام 2004 انطلق في أولى رحلاته المذهلة إلى المنطقة.
وبالرغم من كونه أميركياً يهودياً، تمكن من التواصل مع شبان شرق أوسطيين في مناطق لا يجرؤ إلا قلائل من الغربيين على دخولها، وعرّض حياته للخطر في محاولته لفهم ثقافتهم ورأيهم بالحكومة الأميركية وبإسرائيل.
"أبناء الجهاد" هو نتاج الرحلات التي قام بها كوهن إلى الشرق الأوسط، بصدق وتبصر كتب "كوهن" مغامراته التي تنطلق من لبنان حيث قابل أفراداً من حزب الله في ماكدونالدز، ثم ينتقل إلى إيران حيث يتحدى الحكومة ويهدد ويدخل خلسة إلى الحفلات التي تقام في الخفية تحت الأرض والتي تزخر بالخمرة والموسيقى الغربية، وحيث النفاذ إلى الإنترنت متاح بدون عوائق، وتحمله رحلته المحفوفة بالمخاطر إلى أحد المخيمات الفلسطينية في جنوب لبنان وإلى المناطق الحدودية في سوريا ومعاقل التمرد في الموصل، فضلاً عن مقابلة محليين يقطنون المناطق الحدودية، وعند كل منعطف كان يجد "كوهن" ثقافة متناقضة عند مفترقات طرق غريبة: إنها ثقافة البدو.
