عادة ما تتظافر عدة عوامل وأسباب ومقدمات في قراءة وتفسير الإحداث التاريخية الكبيرة، وخاصة تلك الإحداث المهمة التي تشكل منعطفات مهمة في التاريخ الإنساني، سواء كان ذلك الحدث على صعيد دولة ما او على صعيد المنطقة والعالم، لذلك فان الحرب العالمية الاولى كانت من نوع الأحداث التاريخية الهامة على صعيد أوربا وعلى صعيد العالم، لذلك من غير المنطقي ان نحصر هذا الحدث في انه كان نتيجة اغتيال ولي عهد النمسا، الذي شكل اغتياله العامل المهم والرئيسي وراء اندلاع الحرب، اذ ان هناك مقدمات وأرضية ممهدة كانت تدفع المجتمع الدولي وتدفع العالم نحو الحرب والصراع، فقد تضافرت عوامل متعددة طيلة النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر، اتضحت معالمها خلال الربع الأخير من القرن التاسع عشر، وبالتحديد منذ عام 1870 حتى اندلاع الحرب العالمية الأولى عام 1914، وهذه العوامل مجتمعة كانت هي التي تدفع العالم نحو اتون الحرب، وجعلت من الدول الكبرى ان تتهيأ لخوض حرب شاملة، الى جاء اغتيال ولي عهد النمسا ليشكل المفصل المهم والعامل الرئيسي في اندلاع الحرب، وبالتالي فإننا لابد ان نقدم قراءة وتمهيد للعلاقات الدولية، وبيان كافة العوامل التي كانت تدفع جميعها نحو تأزم العلاقات الدولية، وتدفع الى التنافس والتناحر، ويمكن ان نحصر هذه الأسباب والعوامل التي توصف بأنها غير مباشرة، ولكنها مهمة وتعد ممهدات خلقت ومهدت ظروف مناسبة لاندلاع الحرب.
