هذا كتاب يتناول قصة الإستعمار البلجيكى للكونجو وكيف تمكن ليوبولد الثانى ملك بلجيكا من الإستيلاء على هذا البلد المترامى الأطراف مستخدماً أحط الوسائل، مما ترتب عليه أسوأ سفك للدماء فيما بين سنتى 1890 و 1910 . ويحكى الكتاب قصة حياة المغامر البريطانى هنرى مورتون ستانلى وتفاصيل استيلائه على الكونجو لحساب الملك وكيف قامت حركة عالمية ضد ذلك، وكانت أول حركة عالمية كبيرة لحقوق الإنسان فى العصر الحديث، عندما تكشفت الفظائع التى ارتكبت فى أثناء البحث عن المطاط من أخذ للرهائن وقطع للأيدى واستخدام للسياط. ويسرد الكتاب قصة الإستعمار البرتغالى لأفريقيا وتاريخ تجارة العبيد منذ القرن الخامس عشر، كما يحكى قصة حياة الملك ليوبولد وأسرته وعشيقاته والثروات الهائلة التى حققها من تجارة العاج والمطاط. وقد أجرى المؤلف بحوثاً مستفيضة فى هذا السبيل استعان فيها بمذكرات شخصية كتبها مستكشفون وقباطنة سفن وعسكريون ومذكرات وخطابات شخصية.
