تضعُ تحدياتُ الهويةِ والحداثةِ والتنميةِ والعولمةِ العربَ أمامَ سؤالٍ يبدو في ظاهره ثقافيّاً، فيما هو أكبر من مجرَّد سؤالٍ ثقافيّ، هو سؤال اللغة العربية. اللغةُ، التي هي قوامُ الأمة وقوامُ كيانيتها التاريخية والحضارية والقومية، ليست أداة تخاطبٍ اجتماعيّ فحسب، ولا مستودعَ الأفكار والرموز والقيم الجمالية فحسب، إنها ـ فوق ذلك ـ المستقبلُ. ومَنْ لا لغة له، يصنع الآخرون مستقبلَه. ولأن اللغة العربية أداة من أدوات بناء المستقبل العربي، فهي تحتاج إلى حَقْلٍ وصيانةٍ يوفّران لها التأهيل لذلك. وتبدو تانِك الحاجتان مصطدمتين بتحدياتٍ راهنة لا مندوحة من بناء أجوبةٍ ناجعة عنها، ومنها الازدواجية ـ وأحياناً التعددية ـ اللغوية في الوطن العربي، وثنائية الفصحى/العامية، وتحدّي استيعاب المصطلح العلميّ الحديث، والحاجة الحيوية إلى تطوير النظم المورفولوجية للغة العربية، ونُظُم الاشتقاق فيها حتى يكون في مُكْنِها استيعابُ المفاهيم والمصطلحات المنقولة إليها وتأهيلها لغويّاً، وتطوير حقل الدراسات اللسانية والدلالية المرتبطة باللغة العربية لاتّصال ذلك التطوير بفهمٍ علميّ أفضل لكيفية تطوير قواعد اللغة نفسها. تلك أمثلةٌ لبعض ما يفرض نفسه اليوم من تحدياتٍ على اللغة العربية وعلى إرادةِ تجنيدها في معركة بناء المستقبل ـ الثقافي والعلميّ والاجتماعي والتنموي ـ للوطن العربي.
